An outstanding opportunity to show your support for peace, equality and social justice
Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the advancement of democracy and human rights. His passing signaled the beginning of a new era: a time for us to pick up the torch to advance his legacy of dialogue and activism. The monument, which is being constructed at Skylawn Memorial Park with the support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the NAACP, will be a place of reflection and education, a landmark where people can gather to find strength and inspiration to continue to drive positive change. Don’t miss this chance to be part of history.
The Nelson Mandela Memorial
The Nelson Mandela Memorial is designed to be experienced as a tree. As a symbol of life and growth, this sculpture provides shelter and most importantly inspiration. “Pulling the branch of a tree” is a literal translation of Nelson Mandela’s birth name, Rolihlahla.
This “tree” is made of branches pulling and spiraling from the earth and allowing the visitor to take a journey paralleling his life. The massive bronze plates, while anchored to the earthly granite surface we share, de-materialize towards the sky. Water gently rolls down half of the tree’s “canopy” into a pool sized proportionally to his prison cell. The sunlight is filtered and dances like windblown leafs on the pavement and visitors. The three granite monoliths are rooted to the ground.
As visitors spiral into the Memorial, they discover each monolith has significant Nelson Mandela quotes from three distinct phases of his life: His life before, during and after his imprisonment. All of these are equal in importance and together interlock to form the tree canopy with one perfect complete oculus opening towards the sky… Hopefully re-framing the way visitors will look at his life and contributions and leave a changed person.
